What is included in the ISBN and Channel Distribution service offered through CraigsPress.com?

By purchasing ISBN and Channel Distribution, you receive an ISBN for your book and one year of Retail Channel Distribution.

What happens after purchasing the ISBN and Channel Distribution service?

After purchasing this service for your book, we will obtain your personal ISBN for your book registered under CraigsPress.com. This 13-digit number will be inserted in your manuscript on the copyright page during the production process. We will supply an ISBN barcode for your back cover once you reach that point in production.

After your book is published and available for purchase, your book will be circulated through the retail channel. The process requires anywhere from two week to two months to circulate into retailer systems, depending on each individual retailer.

What is an ISBN?

"ISBN" stands for "International Standard Book Number." It is a unique, 13-digit number assigned to books published internationally. The purpose of the ISBN is to establish and identify a title or edition of a work, as it is published by a specific publisher. This allows for a more efficient mode of marketing and purchasing for retailers, libraries, universities, distributors and individual consumers.

Why are some ISBNs 10 digits and some 13 digits?

On January 1, 2007 all new ISBNs switched from being 10-digit numbers to 13-digit numbers to allow for the creation of more new ISBNs. Since all ISBNs are original numbers that cannot be reused or repeated, more numbers had to be added, and will most likely be added again in the future.

Do the numbers in an ISBN have any meaning?

Yes, the numbers are specific to and identify four things:

  1. Group identifier code, which groups nations and countries geographically
  2. Specific publisher identifier
  3. Title or specific edition of the title identifier
  4. Check number, which proves that the ISBN is authentic

Why does my ISBN have an X?

An X can appear as the last digit of the ISBN, the check digit, and represents the Roman numeral for 10. The X allows for a single-digit value of 10, since 10 is a double-digit number, but the check digit is only a single-digit entry.

Can I use an ISBN that I previously purchased for my manuscript?

Not at this time. ISBNs are specific to each individual version of the work and the publisher. If you obtained an ISBN for your manuscript, it only applies to your unpublished, manuscript version of your book. Once your manuscript is published through CraigsPress.com, a new ISBN is necessary.

What is Channel Distribution?

Channel Distribution is the act of your book being included in Ingram's (our distributor) database, which supplies information to other retailers' systems. This basically means that your book will show up in retailers' systems if someone searches for it, which enables retailers to order your book for their own store or for a single customer order if they choose. In addition, many retailers' Web sites will list your book for purchase directly through their site.

How long does Channel Distribution last before it expires?

With your original purchase of the ISBN and Channel Distribution, your book will be available for one year through the retail channel. The year of distribution starts from the time your book becomes available for purchase (if you purchase it before your book is published). If your book is already live but you add on an ISBN and distribution, we'll have to resubmit your book to our printer to initiate this change, and additional charges may apply (contact us for details).

You will have a chance to renew the distribution service before it expires by purchasing one, two or three years of channel distribution renewal. You can renew at any time, and the year(s) will be added to the expiration date, not the date of purchase. If you miss the expiration date, you can reinstate the channel distribution for an additional fee.
